Farooq’s son Omar rises as Chief Minister

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Finally divorcing the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and choosing National Conference (NC) as new partner, the Congress party on Tuesday anointed NC president Omar Abdullah as new Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Though nitty-gritty of the alliance will be discussed in few days, sources here said it would be a Maharastra-type alliance with full six year term to Abdullah and a deputy chief minister from the Congress party preferably from the Jammu region.

Insiders in the Congress party said Akhnoor MLA Sham Lal Sharma may get the Number 2 crown, because dice seems heavily loaded against other two competitors Raman Bhalla and Tara Chand.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had already made up her mind to switch up alliance in favour of the NC once the results were announced on Sunday.

Fuel prices down but no respite for commuters

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The revision of petrol and diesel prices, which came into effect from December 6, may be proving to be a relief to the transporters but it has failed to provide respite to the commuters so far.

In the backdrop of sharp fall in crude oil in the global market, the central government reduced the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 3 per litre respectively early this month.

The assumptions that the fall in fuel prices means a reduction in the passenger fares as well are proving wrong with each passing day much to the dismay of a commoner. The question as to why the fares haven’t been reduced after the cut in fuel prices has become a “centre of debate” among commuters across the valley these days. The commuters across the valley contend that the government should revise the passenger fares after the recent drop in petrol and diesel prices.

Anti-terror bill not diluted: Chidambaram

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Jaitley also brought in the controversial remark of Minority Affairs Minister A R Antulay doubting if Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare were killed by the terrorists who stormed Mumbai and caused havoc for three days. Pranab hints at Cong, PDP coalition govt

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Foreign affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee today said that Mumbai attacks would have no bearing on the Indo-Pak relations with reference to the resolution of Kashmir issue. Meanwhile, Mukherjee, a heavy weight of the Congress, indirectly hinted at formation of a future Congress-PDP coalition in the state by praising the architect of the CongressPDP coalition – whom he did not name — and the functioning of this coalition which was cobbled together following the fragmented mandate of 2002 assembly elections.

While addressing a press conference here this afternoon, the union foreign affairs minister said: “Dealing with terrorism is part of global war on terrorism; and it can, in no way, be linked to the Indo-Pak relations with reference to the Kashmir issue.” Mukherjee, however, admit ted that “there was a pause” as far as composite dialogue between India and Pakistan was concerned.

He said that the leadership of India and Pakistan has agreed on various occasions that the territory of Pakistan should not be allowed to foment terror against India. “We reminded Pakistan’s High Commissioner about the joint statement of General Pervez Musharaf on Januray 6, 2004 — whereby Pakistan had agreed that its territory would not be allowed to sponsor terror against India — and the reiteration in this connection by the current president of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari on September 24, 2008, should be honored,” the union minister said.

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
It’s not just adults who have a thing or two to discuss with other people, babies too have their own social lives and enjoy group interaction, according to a world-first study.

In their study, the researchers examined groups of nine-month-old babies in New South Wales and Britain.

And they came across astounding results—it was found that infants had “social brains’’ and focused not just on their mothers but on social life in groups as well.

“They communicate with more than one baby at once, show jealousy and generous inclusiveness,’’ The Daily Telegraph quoted Professor Bradley as saying.
