Now, lessons in politics for Indian women
Noting the poor representation of women in Parliament and state Assemblies, the Centre for Social Research has tied up with other NGOs for a project to create a pool of women to participate in state and national electoral politics.
The project, christened ‘Enhancing the Role of Women in Strengthening Democracy’, aims to create a pool of 1000 women who will be motivated to contest elections, giving them gender parity in politics.
“The total number of women contesting the 2004 general elections from recognized political parties were just 174, out of which only 45 got elected,” Hasina Kharbhih, the team Leader of Impulse NGO, CSR’s partner in the project for Northeast, said.

Russia offers allies aid as United States base is shut
Despite devaluing the rouble, falling oil prices and a collapse in its domestic stock market, Moscow still offered support to three countries that will pit it against the interests of the United States.
The announcements will dampen optimistic hopes that last week’s conciliatory Davos comments on both economics and defence by powerful Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin marked a change in Moscow’s combative stance towards the West.
Kyrgyzstan’s President announced his country would shut the United States Manas military airbase near the cap ital Bishkek that provides what the Pentagon says is a “hugely important” logistical support for its operations in Afghanistan.

Gaza militants fire more rockets into Israel
On Saturday too, Palestinian militants had fired a rocket from Gaza that exploded close to the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon without causing any damages or injuries, an Israeli military spokesman said.
Israeli forces and Gaza militants are supposed to refrain from attacking each other under a fragile ceasefire. The truce has been breached several times, making diplomatic efforts to build a lasting agreement difficult.
The rocket attacks were the first from Gaza since Thursday, said the Israeli military spokesman, who declined to be identified under army regulations.
