French tourist kidnapped in Pakistan
The 41-year-old man was kidnapped in an area where ethnic Baluch separatist groups and Islamist fighters linked to al-Qaeda and the Taliban are known to operate, around 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the border with Afghanistan.
His abduction comes seven weeks after an American UN official was released following a two month hostage or deal in Baluchistan that was claimed by a shadowy Baluch rebel group trying to extract concessions from the central government.

Singh’s second innings from Friday
The support letters that he submitted include also those of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal plus four independents. He, however, kept the suspense on their induction in the government, saying “you will know it in due course of time.”
Even before Sonia and Dr Manmohan Singh drove down together to the Rashtrapati Bhawan, they made it known to the allies through the party’s intermediaries that they will get only one-fourth of the ministerial berths and not 50:50 as agreed upon by the Congress in 2004 in view of the much larger mandate earned by it.

Congress may say no to new allies
The party’s highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee, discussed the scenario after the announcement of the results which have given it a near absolute majority, but there was no specific mention of parties or individuals such as SP or Lalu Prasad, chief of the RJD.
However, the working committee was emphatic that discussions would be held on Tuesday with “prepoll allies”, parties like DMK, Trinamool Congress and NCP, to discuss the strategy how to go about Cabinet formation.

Bowlers hand Rajasthan easy win
The difference lay in how the two seats of bowlers exploited the bounce offered by the Centurion pitch; Bangalore’s couldn’t, Rajasthan’s did to perfection. Bangalore used the short ball only after the strategy break, by which time the required run-rate was down to below five an over.
Shane Warne won a good toss and chose to field on a new pitch that had received rain overnight. Unlike in the last few games where he opened with spin from one end, he chose to give his fast bowlers a chance to exploit the conditions.

2734 people have died of sunstroke over 12 years in Orissa
While the figure of 2042 people dying of sunstroke remains the highest in 1998, the killer heatwave has continued to take human lives every year after that.
Altogether 236 people had died in 2005, sources said. However, it was alleged that the figure had went up to 582.
As sunstroke was not part of the relief code, the victims of poor families did not get any assistance from the government.
