Sri Lanka win despite late drama

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
After Angelo Mathews and Muttiah Muralitharan had combined to devastating effect with the bat, Sri Lanka's pace bowlers scythed through Pakistan's top order to lead them to a 36-run victory on a blustery day in Dambulla. Sri Lanka seemingly had the game in the bag at 134 for 8, but a gritty and stroke-filled 62run stand between Umar Gul and Mohammad Aamer so nearly spoilt their day. Pakistan had bossed the opening exchanges after electing to field on a greentinged pitch, but they never quite recovered from a batting Powerplay in which 54 runs were conceded. With none of the frontline batsmen able to build on starts, it was left to the tail to try and pull off a miracle.

Sri Lanka had scripted a stirring revival of their own in the morning. After 44 overs, they were an underwhelming 169 for 6. But once Nuwan Kulasekara fell, having added 42 with Mathews, Murali whirled his bat like a dervish. Gul was top-edged for four and then straight-driven for six in an over that cost 15, and Shahid Afridi then clobbered through the off side for fours before Aamer put the sheen on a superb debut display by bowling him for 32.

Explosive beginning to assembly session

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Noisy scenes and sloganeering marked the first day of the state legislative assembly session here today with legislators of the opposition storming into the well, refusing to listen to any pleas of the Speaker and finally being evicted from the House.

Legislators of majority of the opposition parties, transcending party lines, though inspired by different reasons, today decided to disrupt the proceedings of the House with the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) pack, led by its president Mehbooba Mufti, dominating the show that went on for at least twelve minutes. The Speaker was forced to issue orders for marshalling out the protesting legislators. However, this left the august House half empty.

It appeared like a typical clash of egos between the Speaker of the assembly, M Akbar Lone and the Mehbooba Mufti, with the latter making an effort to dislodge the speaker's mike after Lone ordered the watch and ward staff to push her, and other PDP members, out of the house.

This was the breathtaking culmination of the two-day ceremony held here to pay homage to the 527 soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice.

Arab states ban young, old and sick from hajj

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Arab health ministers decided to ban children, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions from attending the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia this year in effort to slow the spread of swine flu.

In a meeting that ended late Wednesday, the ministers, however, stopped short of calling for the cancellation of this year's hajj a duty for all Muslims in their lifetime which attracts about three million people every year to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The fear is that the close proximity of millions of people from around the world in late November, when the hajj takes place following peak flu season, will fuel the outbreak of the deadly disease.

Israeli warships make rare Suez crossing

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Two Israeli navy ships made a rare crossing of Egypt’s Suez Canal on Tuesday, headed from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, a port source told AFP.

One of the ships, the Hanit, already crossed the canal both ways in June, in what the source said was the first case of a large Israeli warship using the strategic waterway, although this was not possible to confirm officially.

After fighting several wars since Israel’s foundation in 1948, Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979.

The other ship to cross on Tuesday, the Eilat, was named after a destroyer sunk by Egypt with the loss of 47 lives shortly after the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, the source said

Political allies flocked to Yudhoyono’s home in Bogor, on Java island, to congratulate the former army general as “quick counts” of votes cast across the archipelago of 226 million people rolled in.

Abuses against Muslims in United States

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The day U.S. President Barack Obama reached out to Muslims around the world through his speech at the Turkish Parliament, saying the United States “is not and will never be at war with Islam,” Muslim Americans described what looked like a war on their community in the U.S. The American Muslim Taskforce (AMT) on Civil Rights and Elections, a coalition of major national Islamic organizations, discussed their concerns at a briefing at the National Press Club on April 6.

“This is a very important message to the American people, to the West and to the Muslim world in general,” said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).“We appreciate Obama’s efforts to bring peace and justice to the Muslim world and American Muslims are not only willing but they are ready to help,” he said.

Obama needs to improve Washington’s relations with six to seven million American Muslims — relations badly damaged in the previous administration’s “war on terror” and by its invasion of two Muslim countries.

Obama marks Paris milestone: Statue in wax museum

Complete with new gray hairs and two fake bodyguards, a wax version of President Barack Obama took a trip on Monday to the Eiffel Tower.

After visiting France’s most famous monument, the statue traveled to Paris’ Musee Grevin wax museum, where it will stand alongside the likenesses of Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin.

Sculptor Eric Saint Chaffray had never seen Obama in person. “The main difficulty is making it without meeting him, from press photos,” he said as the statue was unveiled today. The hot summer sun at the Eiffel Tower threatened to melt the fake president’s face, prompting helpers to shade him with an umbrella,
