Major, 4 jawans, 4 ultras killed
An army officer, four troopers and four militants were killed in two different encounters in Handwara and Chowkibal areas of frontier district of Kupwara. Chowkibal encounter entered the third consecutive day today.
Major Mohit Sharma, who has received Sena Medal, of 1 Parachute army regiment along with four troopers was killed in Hafruda forests of Handwara area in district Kupwara last evening. Militants, police maintained, have managed their escape.
Chowkibal encounter was carried out by 16 JAT regiment under the aegis of 68 Mountain Brigade Trehgam in Drayangyari Chowkibal while as the killed troopers were attached to 6 Rashtriya Rifles of 7 Sector Rashtriya Rifles based in Watayan area of Handwara.
