Maya gets Supreme Court notice for Rs 1,000-crore statues

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Supreme Court issued a show-cause notice to Uttar Pradesh government for using public money for installing statues of Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday.

A vacation bench of the Supreme Court took up a public interest litigation (PIL) filed against Mayawati for allegedly misusing public money for installing statues of prominent Dalit leaders like Dr BR Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram besides party symbols.

The PIL seeks a stay on the inauguration of these statues on July 3.

The petitioner has alleged that the multi-crore projects of installing statues are being carried out as a state policy, which is arbitrary and violates Article 14 of the Constitution.

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Pakistan’s Supreme Court dismissed on Wednesday an appeal by Sarabjit Singh, an Indian man seeking a review of a death sentence imposed on him for spying and carrying out bombings in the 1990s.

The rejection came as relations between old rivals India and Pakistan inched towards improvement following a meeting last week between their leaders, the first since last year’s militant attack on Mumbai in which 166 people were killed.

Singh was sentenced to death in 1991 for spying and bombings that killed 14 people. His family said he was innocent and had crossed the border into Pakistan accidentally in 1990 while he was drunk. Pakistani officials said Singh was arrested while trying to slip back into India after the bomb blasts

Supreme Court to hear case against Sridevi and Boney Kapoor

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Bollywood actress Sridevi and hubby Boney Kapoor are surely making news but for all the wrong reasons. The couple are due to appear in Supreme Court on Monday in relation to the lawsuit filed against them seeking a trial against them for the alleged fraud involving bouncing of cheques worth over Rs 96.6 million given to a film financier.

Filed by financier Madhu Gupta, who runs Mumbai based Photo Films Industries, the lawsuit is to come up for hearing before a bench consisting of Chief Justice K.G.Balakrishnan, Justice R.V.Raveendran and Justice M.K.Sharma.

Gupta has moved the apex court challenging a Bombay High Court order, which on March 26, 2008 had stalled Sridevi's trial in the case.

In her petition to the apex court, Gupta claimed that the actress and her husband had availed themselves of financial help and credit facility from their business concerns. The couple had issued three cheques, one for Rs 92,50,484, one for Rs 8,41,85,682 and another for Rs 31,62,074 to discharge their legally enforceable liability. However, all the three cheques had bounced.

Supreme Court says no to self-defence groups

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
In striking contrast to the state government's repeated claims of strengthening the Village Defence Committees (VDCs), Supreme Court of India has questioned the very constitution of these self-defence groups and termed it as "abetting a crime".

Supreme Court has said that constitution of such Defence Committees is abetting a crime if those having guns in their hands kill or indulge in committing excesses on other people. It has strongly said that the police and paramilitary forces should be deployed in adequate numbers to tackle the militants and not common people.

Questioning the anti-militant self defence movement started by the various governments across the country, Supreme Court has called for an independent assessment of the situation arising out of it. The observation has been made by the Supreme Court in a petition filed by Nandini Sundar, Ramachandra Guha and E.A.S. Sarma challenging the setting up of Salwa Judum (Self defence groups) by the government in Chhattisgarh.

Though, advocates of the Supreme Court pleading the case made no mention of Jammu and Kashmir but the observation is being seen as a landmark one and an eyeopener for the state government.
