Explosive beginning to assembly session

Noisy scenes and sloganeering marked the first day of the state legislative assembly session here today with legislators of the opposition storming into the well, refusing to listen to any pleas of the Speaker and finally being evicted from the House.

Legislators of majority of the opposition parties, transcending party lines, though inspired by different reasons, today decided to disrupt the proceedings of the House with the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) pack, led by its president Mehbooba Mufti, dominating the show that went on for at least twelve minutes. The Speaker was forced to issue orders for marshalling out the protesting legislators. However, this left the august House half empty.

It appeared like a typical clash of egos between the Speaker of the assembly, M Akbar Lone and the Mehbooba Mufti, with the latter making an effort to dislodge the speaker's mike after Lone ordered the watch and ward staff to push her, and other PDP members, out of the house.
