Employees stay away from polls
Unlike 2008 Assembly elections, a major chunk of voters preferred to stay indoors in the first phase of Lok Sabha (LS) polling here today. Surprisingly, a major chunk of government employees chose not to exercise their franchise.
All J&K Home Guards Association (JKHGA) had boycotted the election to protest against the fulfillment of their demands.
JKHGA president, Kamla Sharma said that they have been protesting for the last three years, but the government has not paid heed to their demands.
“What has the government given us? We have been protesting on roads for last three years, but no body bothered to mitigate our sufferings,” she said.
Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) members Ram Kumar Sharma said that employees face lot of problems like political exploitation and other social problems and that’s what compels most of them to stay away from polls.

Government finally bows to employee's pressure
Finally yielding to the pressure created by the state-wide employees’ strike, the government today announced the implementation of 6th Pay Commission recommendations from July this year.
This was announced by Minister for Finance Abdul Rahim Rather in a press conference here today after over four-hour long deliberations between five-member cabinet sub-committee and 30-member Joint Coordination Committee of Employees.
Following an agreement, the striking employees announced to defer the strike for one day. They announced that only after the approval of their demands by the cabinet in its meeting on Thursday, the strike would be called off.
Rather stated that July’s salary to be released in August would be hiked as per the recommendations of 6th Pay Commission.
