Government drags feet on army pullout from C-I duties

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Government continues to drag feet on creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) recommended by the Kargil Review Committee to prevent the lack of synergy among the three Services experienced during the Kargil War.

Nine years down the line after the Kargil war, Defence Minister A K Antony has wriggled out from giving any firm date for creating the post by stating that he had sent a reminder to leaders of all political parties on March 4 this year to elicit their views on the issue.

In a report tabled in Parliament on Thursday on a Parliamentary standing committee seeking implementation of the Subramanyam review committee’s recommendations for reforming the national security system, Antony sought to stress that a joint decision making mechanism has been already created in the form of Chief of Staff Committee (COSC) with the chiefs of all three Services as its members.

Valley under siege to thwart Lal Chowk march

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
With very strict curfew, heavy deployment of security forces, and arrest of separatist leadership, the Kashmir Coordination Committee (KCC) march to Lal Chowk was thwarted by the government today. It was government sponsored fear which ruled the entire Valley.

However, curfew was defied in some places including Maisuma, Nowhatta, Baramulla, Pulwama and Rafiabad and protests held.

Not only Lal Chowk but the whole Valley was put under siege with roads, bridges and even lanes at some places sealed with barbed wires, iron barriers and armoured vehicles.

Lakhs of people in Kashmir were made hostage in their respective homes. Curfew was being enforced so strictly that security men were not honouring the curfew passes issued by the government. A number of people, despite having valid curfew passes, were forced to return to their homes.

Jammu Bandh Today

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Various political, social and religious organizations have called for complete Jammu bandh tomorrow in protest against the state Governor N N Vohra's decision of 'surrendering claim' over the forest land allotted to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) and, what they described, 'hurting the sentiments of millions of Hindus living across the country.'

The state unit of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has given the bandh call which has been supported by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and other organizations. All the commercial and business establishments shall remain closed and the private transport would remain off the road.

However, reports from Reasi maintained that the BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and other organizations have also called for Reasi bandh tomorrow and appealed to the people to extend whole hearted support to make it a grand success.

It may be mentioned here that various political and religious organizations today protested against the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's announcement that the state government would take over responsibility of organizing the annual Amarnath pilgrimage from the Shrine Board after Governor N N Vohra asked for same in a letter. He had further announced that the forest land in question would stay with his government for now.

Meanwhile, various political and social organizations staged protest in winter capital and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Governor N N Vohra, PDP and separatist leaders.

After the Governor's decision to "surrender" his claim over the forest land to SASB, hundreds of VHP activists took out a massive protest rally and staged protest at busy Bikram Chowk.

Rental hikes by Army may adversely affect fruit production in Jammu and kashmir

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
With fruit production in Kashmir static, the Kashmiri growers have asked the state and central government not to acquire horticulture land for any official purposes. They are also not satisfied with recent rent hike by the defence ministry.

The growers fear that acquiring of the horticulture land for official purposes will reduce the fruit production in the state. Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in India that has around 2.75 lakh hectares of land under the horticulture. The major portion of this land is used for the cultivation of fresh fruits especially apples.

President, Kashmir Fruit Growers and Dealers Association, Ghulam Rasool Bhat told Kashmir Times that, "The government should come up with a law for banning the use of horticulture land for any official purpose." He said that in Western countries, the government has already banned use of horticulture land for any official purposes, he said, adding similar ban should be imposed in Jammu Kashmir as well. "If steps are not taken, time will come when we will lose major portion of our orchards."
