Iran calm after vote fraud claims trigger clashes

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Tehran was mostly calm on Sunday after election fraud claims triggered violent street clashes, but the government maintained fairly tight control of information flow and new details emerged of arrests of high-profile reformists.

The efforts seemed aimed at avoiding a repeat of the chaos that lasted past midnight Saturday. Opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad set buses and cars ablaze in the capital and threw rocks at police to protest what they viewed as his illegitimate victory.

Iran restored cell phone service that had been down in the capital since Saturday. But Iranians could not send text messages from their phones, and the government increased its Internet filtering in an apparent bit to undercut liberal voices.

It may be mentioned here that various political and religious organizations today protested against the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's announcement that the state government would take over responsibility of organizing the annual Amarnath pilgrimage from the Shrine Board after Governor N N Vohra asked for same in a letter. He had further announced that the forest land in question would stay with his government for now.

Meanwhile, various political and social organizations staged protest in winter capital and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Governor N N Vohra, PDP and separatist leaders.

After the Governor's decision to "surrender" his claim over the forest land to SASB, hundreds of VHP activists took out a massive protest rally and staged protest at busy Bikram Chowk.
