Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front protest in support of Majlis eMushawarat Shopian
Police arrested over a dozen leaders and activists of JKLF during a protest demonstration at Jehangir Chowk here. The demonstrators also lodged their protest against "the shielding of culprits of Shopian incident by the government."
The demonstration was also held to show solidarity with the people of Shopian particularly the Majlis-eMushawarat Shopian (MMS) in their struggle for justice.

Iran calm after vote fraud claims trigger clashes
The efforts seemed aimed at avoiding a repeat of the chaos that lasted past midnight Saturday. Opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad set buses and cars ablaze in the capital and threw rocks at police to protest what they viewed as his illegitimate victory.
Iran restored cell phone service that had been down in the capital since Saturday. But Iranians could not send text messages from their phones, and the government increased its Internet filtering in an apparent bit to undercut liberal voices.

Over 100 injured, Yasin arrested
Police and CRPF used massive force to disperse the demonstrations.It included firing in the air, bursting of smoke shells and resorting to cane charge. Even the houses were ransacked at several places and people dragged out of their homes and beaten. Unofficial reports also said police opened fire on protestors on the outskirts of Shopian.

Strike affects normal life in Pampore
The Pampore residents demand that the land be restored back to its original position. Bar association Pampore has expressed serious concerns over what it said destruction of saffron rich land by the government.
Meanwhile spokesman of the Government today clarified that no land has been leased out to CRPF at Pampore as reported in a section of the press.
Reacting to the report, the spokesman said that the procedure for allotment of any land to army and para-military forces, NOC is required to be issued by the State Home Department. He said this NOC is issued only after the case is cleared by a committee of officers constituted by the government for this purpose.

Valley under siege to thwart Lal Chowk march
However, curfew was defied in some places including Maisuma, Nowhatta, Baramulla, Pulwama and Rafiabad and protests held.
Not only Lal Chowk but the whole Valley was put under siege with roads, bridges and even lanes at some places sealed with barbed wires, iron barriers and armoured vehicles.
Lakhs of people in Kashmir were made hostage in their respective homes. Curfew was being enforced so strictly that security men were not honouring the curfew passes issued by the government. A number of people, despite having valid curfew passes, were forced to return to their homes.

Bandh evokes poor response in Jammu
Several commercial vehicles plied on the city roads as well as in the periphery here as usual while the business establishments remained open in the area. There was least affect on the attendance in the government as well as the private offices while all the government institutions functioned normally. The students of the government schools as well as some of the private schools within the city and its fringes attended their class as usual.
Similar was the condition in several other districts of the region. Reports received from the districts said that the Sangharsh Samiti activists indulged in forcible closure of shops and schools at several places.

Independence not a viable option for Kashmir : Omar
Abdullah, a prominent Kashmiri leader, told a television channel in an interview that the situation in kashmir was “bad” and the alienation of the people was a cause for concern.
He also denied that ISI was involved in the recent widespread protests in the valley in the wake of the Amarnath land transfer issue and said the protests were an upheaval of people’s pent up simmering anger.

Kashmiris defy curfew, 16 killed in firing
The people defied curfew restrictions and held protest demonstrations. Police and security forces opened fire on the demonstrators at a number of places in Bandipora, Lasjan, Bagh-e-Mehtab, Rainawari, Saidapora, Bemina, and Baramulla resulting in killings and injuries to the people.
Force was used against the demonstrators at large number of other places also. The cops fired in air, lobbed smoke shells and resorted to lathi charge. Even an ambulance of SMHS hospital , JK01 D 2713, carrying bodies of the two person, killed in firing, back to Lasjan was attacked by CRPF and BSF men at Lasjan bridge. Its window panes were smashed and those, including the employees of SMHS, were beaten to pulp.

Yasin ends fast after Prime Minister’s assurance
JKLF Chief was discharged from SKIMS where he was undergoing treatment following deterioration in his health due to the fast. Amid pro-freedom slogans, a large number of people including women and children later took Malik back home from SKIMS in the shape of a rally.
They stayed on, raising slogans until the convoy of vehicles carrying Yasin Malik reached Maisuma locality. Anticipating protests on the arrival of JKLF chief back home after six days of hospitalisation, there was heavy deployment of police and CRPF in Maisuma and adjoining areas.

Alleged attack on taxi driver, passengers sparks protest
When the news spread here that some drivers and passengers were severely beaten up by the activists of Shiv Sainiks and BJP, large number of drivers took to the streets and shouted slogans against the incident. The protesters also shouted slogans against police alleging they have given free hand to the extremist elements in Jammu to beat Kashmiris and to damage their properties.
The agitated protesters said that Sartaj Ahmad Hajam a Tata Sumo driver was critically injured when Shiv Sainiks and BJP activists attacked his vehicle and severely beat him up and the rest of the passengers boarding the vehicle. The protesters said that police party was watching the whole scene from a short distance as mute spectators without bothering to rescue the hapless driver and the passengers.

Curfew imposed in Jammu, 24 injured in violence
In the aftermath of police action, violence broke out in some parts of the city and at Bishnah in which over two dozen persons including dozen cops were wounded. The protestors torched police vehicle, entered in ding dong battle with police, burnt tyres and effigies of various Kashmiri leaders, raised road blockades, indulged in stone pelting incidents while the police resorted to cane charge and even fired tear smoke shells upon the protestors at Bishnah and Jammu.
Amid protests and violence, the body was consigned to flames by the family and relatives at Bishnah this afternoon.

Jammu Bandh Today
The state unit of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has given the bandh call which has been supported by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and other organizations. All the commercial and business establishments shall remain closed and the private transport would remain off the road.
However, reports from Reasi maintained that the BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and other organizations have also called for Reasi bandh tomorrow and appealed to the people to extend whole hearted support to make it a grand success.
It may be mentioned here that various political and religious organizations today protested against the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's announcement that the state government would take over responsibility of organizing the annual Amarnath pilgrimage from the Shrine Board after Governor N N Vohra asked for same in a letter. He had further announced that the forest land in question would stay with his government for now.
Meanwhile, various political and social organizations staged protest in winter capital and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Governor N N Vohra, PDP and separatist leaders.
After the Governor's decision to "surrender" his claim over the forest land to SASB, hundreds of VHP activists took out a massive protest rally and staged protest at busy Bikram Chowk.

60 injured, six in police firing
Normal life was paralysed here and in Ganderbal in view of the spontaneous general strike. Amarnath yatra remained suspended from here to Baltal for more than six hours following violent clashes between demonstrators and cops at Ganderbal.
Over 10,000 vehicles were stranded on the road and were being cleared only late this evening after heavy deployment of army, para military personnel and police. Police opened Ganderbal old city here and six persons received bullet injuries. The angry protestors burnt police vehicles and ransacked government buildings.
This morning demonstrators took to streets and held demonstrations. Whatever shops and other business were open in the morning were closed immediately and the vehicular traffic movement particularly the passenger transport went off the roads. Most government offices and educational institutions and banks remained closed remained closed.

Protests, shutdown in Kupwara against torture
Police had arrested the civilians during the wee hours of Tuesday after reportedly a militant was killed in the village in a brief gun fight.
Kupwara township also observed a complete shutdown in protest against what locals alleged atrocities by police on civilians.However, after intensified protests against police, the youth were released after two days.
One of the released youth, Fayaz Ahmad Mir, who is undergoing treatment at sub district hospital (SDH), Kupwara is stated to be in a critical condition. 30-year old, Fayaz bore the torture marks on his body and doctors attending on him said that he was under constant observation as his condition was critical.
